Modak

Ganeshchaturthi is around the corner and Modak is the favourite of Ganeshji.

Modak are made of rice flour and a sweet filling of freshly grated coconut and jaggery. Modak are steamed and are served hot.

I tried this time the stuffing with khoya/Mawa /reduced dry milk and it really came well. A step different and innovative from the original Modak. Try Modak with sweet Mawa and you will surely love it.

So let’s start with Om ‘Ganapatiye Namah ‘

Ingredients

Rice flour 2 cups

Water 2 cups

1 liter of milk for making khoya

1/2 tablespoon of cardamom powder

2 tablespoon of crushed almonds, cashews and raisins

4-5 tablespoon of sugar

2 tablespoon of ghee

Recipe

Boil water and add ghee to it.

Add the the rice flour and stir well so that it combines well.

Cover it with a lid for 2 minutes and off the flame.

In another pan, heat a tablespoon of ghee and add the crushed dry fruits and mix the khoya well. Add sugar and mix well. Let it cool. Keep the filling aside.

Now grease hands take a portion of the rice dough like a lemon size. Make it flat with hand and place it in a Modak mould. Press it with finger so that it covers the inside surrounding.

Put a spoonful of khoya in the middle of the Modak and cover the end with little rice dough. Press it gently to get bind.

Now open the mould slowly and take out Modak gentlely. Continue the same process and steam them in a steamer for 16 minutes.

Serve hot.
